Poneren

Scope

The motivation behind building Poneren

Poneren is a complex world with interesting laws (e.g., Magic), characters, and relationships for story creation and telling.

The goal of the project

This should be a world in which a variety of stories worth telling can occur. The reader should find a logical and cohesive world that assists and doesn't get in the way of meaningful stories. It should be deep enough to encourage forming connections with the people and situations that occur.

Poneren's Unique Selling point

The interplay between magic (believe/faith) and science (knowledge/understanding) and the problems created by too much dependence on one without enough of the eother.

Theme

Genre

Any sci-fi/fantasy genre should fit within the Poneren universe, depending on the time the story falls. The early stories belong in a late middle ages/early renaissance fantasy era.

Reader Experience

There should be mystery. Nothing can or should be completely know, there should always be something a layer deeper. Whether that's the science behind the magic (and the magic deeper than that science), layers of organizations and motivation, exploration or history, there's always more to find, and should be some hints of things missing.

Reader Tone

Poneren is generally bright and hopeful, although bad things happen, and those bad things add the most interest in the world.

Recurring Themes

Cycles; faith/knowledge; exploration and discovery

Character Agency

Only moderate; characters are bound by the rules, and even though magic allows them to work around some of the rules, it still has areas that cannot be broken.

Focus

Logical magical/skill system, and connections with science and knowledge
Organizations and motivations
Interpersonal relationships
